AI (Artificial Intelligence) has become very popular in the past few months, in particular, ChatGPT. People have been using AI for various purposes such as for healthcare, transportation, education, agriculture, and finance. And now people are using AI to write blog posts, short stories, articles, and novels. But not everyone likes to read the works of ChatGPT or AI technology.
In self-publishing, people are now publishing works that were produced by AI and are being sold under the names of human writers. Amazon allows authors to self-publish their books through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and then list them for sale on Amazon’s website. However, more authors are using AI to write books and publish them.
Not all readers want to read books that are AI-generated. Many appreciate and prefer to read the works of human authors. So, Amazon’s solution to this problem was to create new rules and guidance regarding AI-generated and AI-assisted content.
I recently read an article on The Guardian website regarding Amazon’s new rules and guidelines for AI-generated and AI-assisted content that’s published on their Kindle Direct Publishing platform.
Amazon issued the following statement on their Kindle Direct Publishing forum on Wednesday 6 September 2023:
“We are actively monitoring the rapid evolution of generative AI and the impact it is having on reading, writing, and publishing, and we remain committed to providing the best possible shopping, reading, and publishing experience for our authors and customers. To that end, beginning today, when you publish a new title or make edits to and re-publish an existing title through KDP, you will be asked whether your content is AI-generated.”
“As always, whether publishers make use of AI technologies or not, all books in our store must adhere to our KDP Content Guidelines, including the requirement that you accurately inform us when content is AI-generated.”
Amazon has included a new section in its KDP Content Guidelines about using AI to publish a new book, and has defined the terms AI-generated and AI-assisted content:
“We define AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool. If you used an AI-based tool to create the actual content (whether text, images, or translations), it is considered “AI-generated,” even if you applied substantial edits afterward.
“If you created the content yourself, and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve that content (whether text or images), then it is considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” Similarly, if you used an AI-based tool to brainstorm and generate ideas, but ultimately created the text or images yourself, this is also considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” It is not necessary to inform us of the use of such tools or processes.
Amazon added that the author/publisher must verify whether their content was AI-generated or AI-assisted according to their content guidelines.
So, if you are a self-published author, please read Amazon’s guidelines regarding publishing AI-generated or AI-assisted content. If you do not comply with Amazon’s new rules, you may find that the company may remove any books that they suspect were produced by AI.
